Keyshot crashes when opening

Hi,
I have following problem: when I install Keyshot I can open it one time and work on a file. After I close Keyshot, it won’t open again, it just crushes while loading. I deleted Keyshot and reinstalled it completely, then it opens, but only once until I save and close my scene, then it won’t open again. I did this now about nearly 10 times and can’t find a workaround or solution. I searched the forum but did not find anything similar.

Is anybody experiencing the same issue? Can anyone help me out?

I am running Keyshot 2023 on a Mac Studio I recently bought ( M1 Max, 64GB RAM, 32core GPU, Mac OS Ventura).

Thanks!

Are your drivers up to date?

Do you have Denoise enabled? If enabled try disabling.

Thanks for your reply,
yes drivers are up to date.
Denoise? Well I can’t check since I can’t even open Keyshot, it just crushes immediately when opening.

Any idea? I also started a support ticket now…

I Have the same issue

Hey, there are a few things you can try with this.

  • Locate your resource folder (on Mac that would usually be in Application support) and rename the KS12Settings.xml
  • Open KeyShot and make sure to disable all migration

You can also check your whether or not your file path contains any special characters that might cause any trouble.

If this fixed it great! If not, please open another support ticket and attach the rename Settings file. Please also reference this thread in your ticket.

With the help of the support I figured out that when I delete the thumbnails file from the ressource folder keyshot is running again. Unfortunately I have to delete this file now every time I want to run Keyshot… it‘s a little bit annoying but works. Hopefully with the next update this bug is gone

I was helping one of my KeyShot users with the same issue. Launching and crashing almost immediately. Removing the thumbnail file didn’t work. What we eventually found was her graphics card as the issue but more over it was due to KeyShot 11 settings being imported to the 2023 install. She had GPU enabled in KeyShot 11 and earlier versions. When those were imported, 2023 would load trying to use the GPU and crash. Uninstalling fully and reinstalling without importing settings allowed 2023 to open and only then we saw the GPU button disabled with a notice about the graphics card driver version. If you’re up to trying a reinstall that may work for you. Alternatively if you need to keep removing the thumbnails file I’d say make a launch script that removes that and launches KeyShot in 1 step. Saves you from manually doing it. Good luck!

Hi @kirk.fuller,

That sounds actually a lot like this problem which will be patched at the end of this week: Crash upon import of .bip in Keyshot 2023 (12.1.0) - Product Feedback & Ideas - Luminaries

That had indeed to do with scenes which were saved while it was on GPU. It only crashed (when I tested it) on import a .bip file, not if you actually opened it.

Good to hear there is a patch.
From my side it was not because of settings and GPU. I reinstalled Keyshot a few times, opened a new scene, no GPU involved, closed and tried to reopen anf it simply did not open again. So the only way to get it running was to remove the thumbnails file.
However, if there is a patch soon, that is good to hear.

Hi @sascha can you tell me if you are running the KeyShot 2023.2 update from a few weeks ago? There was an issue with the thumbnail file that was fixed in that update.

Sorry if I’ve confused you but that patch was for an issue on PC’s which couldn’t import .bip files. From the description Kirk posted I thought that one was different as your issue. I’m sure Synje can help you further.
